Durante sua visita ao Brasil, como convidado especial do 2º Encontro Nacional de Contrabaixistas, Gary Karr fez uma visita a nosso Atelier.
          Depois de conhecer nosso trabalho e tocar um instrumento ainda em fase final de construção, o prof. Karr encomendou um contrabaixo no mesmo modelo sugerindo apenas uma modificação (Uma das vantagens de se ter um instrumento construído sob encomenda).
          No mesmo dia  escreveu a seguinte declaração: "...The finest bass maker in Brazil and one of the greatest luthiers of  the world..."
          A visita desse, que é um dos maiores nomes do contrabaixo mundial, reconhecido internacionalmente e autor de inúmeras gravações para contrabaixo, já foi uma honra e um prazer, mas a intenção de comprar um instrumento nosso foi uma prova de reconhecimento maior que qualquer elogio.
          O instrumento, com modelo criado por mim,  foi construído com base na técnica da escola italiana de meu mestre Enzo Bertelli e com a experiência adquirida nos últimos 30 anos em que tenho trabalhado em meu Atelier.

 

          During his visit to Brazil, as a special guest to the II National Encounter of Bass Players, Gary Karr did a visit to our Workshop.
          After he knew our work and played an instrument which still was at its final phase of construction, Karr asked for a bass at the same kind, just suggesting a modification (An advantage of having an instrument built just for you).
          That same day, he wrote the following: "... The finest bass maker in Brazil and one of the greatest luthiers of the world..."
          The visit of whom is one of the biggest names in worldwide bass, internationally well known and author of a number of bass recordings, was already an honor and a pleasure, but the will of buying one of my instruments was a prove of knowledge more than any praise.
          That instrument, a model created by myself, was built based on the italian school thechnic by my teacher Enzo Bertelli and with the experience I got in the last 18 years that I have been working in my Workshop.

          Na construção desse instrumento foi utilizado material de primeira qualidade, assim como em todos os nossos contrabaixos.
          O fato de ter uma encomenda de um dos maiores contrabaixistas do planeta fez com que todo o trabalho fosse realizado com enorme prazer e alegria.
          O prof. Karr gostou muito do modelo, ainda sem verniz, que experimentou no Atelier (foto 1) e apenas sugeriu que o cotovelo (a parte do braço que encaixa no corpo do instrumento) tivesse uma inclinação maior, o que foi feito e pode ser visto na foto 4


          In the construction of that instrument it was used first quality material, as well as all those basses we build.
          The fact of having a job from one of the best bass players in the planet, did that all the work was achieved with great pleasure and joy.
          Prof. Karr liked very much the model, even without varnish, he played it at the workshop (picture1) and just suggested that the elbow (that part of the arm which fits to the body of the instrument) need to has more inclination, which was done and can be seen in picture 4

          Quando se constrói um instrumento por encomenda, todos os detalhes são levados em conta.
          É necessário que o músico sinta-se completamente bem quando usa o contrabaixo, portanto algumas medidas devem ser tomadas antes de iniciar a construção. A altura do músico, o comprimento de seu braço e o tamanho de sua mão são alguns exemplos de medidas que são diferentes de pessoa a pessoa, e por isso mesmo devem ser levadas em consideração.
          Cada ser humano tem um padrão ergonométrico próprio que deve ser observado ao se construir um instrumento.
          Além disso, o tipo de música que o músico vai executar e sua maneira de tocar também são importantes. Sendo o contrabaixo um dos instrumentos com maior área de aplicação na música, ele é tocado de formas muito diferentes.
          Um baixista de jazz vai utilizar uma regulagem e medidas bem diferentes de um músico de orquestra sinfônica, por exemplo.

          When we made an instrument by a commission, we take care of all the details.
          It is necesary that a musician feels very well when he plays a bass, so we must take care of some details before start its construction.
          The high of the musician, the long of his arm, the size of his hand are some examples of sizes that are different from person to person, and that is why we should consider them.
          Each human being has its own ergonometric pattern which has to be observed when you made an instrument for him.           Besides, the kind of music the musician is going to play and the way he plays it are also important. Being the bass one of those instruments with more aplications in music, it is played in many different ways. For instance, a jazz bass player will use a regular one and quite different setup than a musician from a symphonic orchestra.

          Depois de observar todos esses aspectos relativos ao músico é que o Lutier inicia a construção de seu instrumento.
          Todo o material que será utilizado já deve estar separado e preparado para uso.
          Para que o contrabaixo tenha a melhor resposta possível é necessário que já se conheça todas as peças de madeira que serão utilizadas para análise de sua estrutura, veios, densidade, flexibilidade, etc.

          After analyzing all those aspects from each musician is when a Luthier can start constructing an instrument.
          All the material that will be used has to be separated and ready for use.
          For the best response of a bass it is required to know in advance all the wood pieces that will be used in order to analize its structure, annual rings, density, flexibility, etc. 

          Nesse instrumento, contruído para Gary Karr, fiz um detalhe na base da noceta para diferenciá-lo.
          Cada instrumento que faço tem uma marca que o diferencia dos outros, e nesse eu incrustrei em ébano o logotipo de Gary Karr.
          Quando se faz um instrumento sob encomenta, o acompanhamento da construção e a criação desse tipo de detalhe são de extrema importância.
          Fazer esse instrumento foi um dos momentos de maior prazer e evolução em nosso Atelier.
          Gary hoje é um grande amigo.
         

          In that instrument, built for Gary Karr, I did a detail in the base of the noceta to make a difference from the others.
          Each instrument I made has a mark which makes a difference from the others, in that one I put in ebony the logotype of Gary Karr.
          When we made an instrument by a commission, the acompanhamento for the construction and the creation of that kind of detail are extremely important.
          To construct that instrument was one of the most pleasant and evolution moments at our workshop.
Nowadays, Gary is a great friend.
