A Viola da Gamba, assim como toda a família das Gambas, foi a precursora do contrabaixo juntamente com a família dos violinos.

        Isso é fácil de se observar:

  • Contrabaixos com fundo chato, com uma dobra na parte superior e sem pontas na faixa central vem da Gamba. (como você pode ver nas fotos ao lado).
  • Contrabaixos com fundo escavado e com pontas na faixa central são "descendentes" do violino e sua família. Eu faço meus contrabaixos dentro do modelo italiano seguindo a linha da família do violino.

         The Bass Viol as well as all the "Gamba" family was the predecessor of the double bass together with the violin family. This is easy to observe:

  • Double basses with a flat back, with a fold in the upper part and lacking points in the central rib come from Gamba (as you can see in the pictures ).
  • Double basses with a carved back and with points in the central rib "descend" from the violin and its family. I make my double basses following the Italian model within the violin family.
 

 

        Essa Viola das fotos foi encomendada por Eduardo Klein.
        É uma Viola Baixo de 7 cordas renascentista e pode ser vista no circuito de música antiga em São Paulo.
        O tampo desse instrumento foi feito utilizando o material que seria jogado fora na construção de um tampo de contrabaixo.
        Antes de fazer o corte para o tampo de contrabaixo eu desenhei e desenvolvi um sistema de serrotes curvos. Trabalhando com extremo cuidado durante uma semana, retirei as duas peças que seriam esse tampo de Gamba de dentro de uma peça de onde normalmente sairia apenas um tampo de contrabaixo. Aproveitar ao máximo material tão nobre deve ser uma meta na vida de um lutier.

        The viol in the pictures was ordered by Eduardo Klein.
        It is a 7-string Renaissance bass viola and can be seen in the circles of antique music in São Paulo.
        The top of this instrument was made using the material which would be refused in the making of the top of a double bass.
        Before cutting the top of the bass, I designed and developed a system of curved saws. Working extra carefully for a week, I withdrew the two pieces which would be this top for the viol from inside a piece which would normally yield only one top for a double bass. Making the most of such noble material should be the goal of a luthier.

        Uma vez que seria o primeiro instrumento de fundo plano que construia, pesquisei durante um tempo antes de iniciar o trabalho.
        Vários detalhes foram levados em consideração para que se mantivesse fiel à época, mas aproveitando os benefícios das descobertas posteriores no campo da luteria. Toda melhoria que o desenvolvimento da técnica da luteria trouxe desde a época das primeiras Gambas até hoje foi utilizada nessse insrtrumento.
        O encastro do braço (encaixe do braço no corpo do instrumento) na época impreciso, frágil e feito com cravos de ferro batido foi feito como os instrumentos modernos: com precisão, resistência e apenas com um encaixe perfeito e cola.

        Being that my first instrument with a flat back, I did some research before beginning work.
        Several details were taken into consideration so that I would be faithful to the period but also taking advantage of more recent discoveries in the field of lutheria. All the improvement made possible by the development of the lutheria technique from the first viols until today was used in this instrument.
        The neck's "encastro" (the fitting of the neck in the body of the instrument) at the time inaccurate, frail and made with wrought iron rivets was made like the modern instruments: with precision, resistance , a perfect fitting and some glue. 

 

        A voluta é bem diferente dos instrumentos modernos. Além de ter um desing totalmente novo, destaca-se o fato de ser vasada.
        O modelo dessa viola foi desenhado por mim, baseado em fotos e textos sobre o assunto que pesquisei na época.
        Esculpir essa voluta foi um prazer muito grande. Não só pelo desafio, mas também pela beleza do material e do modelo.

        The scroll is quite different from the modern instruments. Besides displaying a totally new design, another remarkable feature is that it is holed.
        I designed the model of this viola based on pictures and texts about the subject I researched at the time.
        Carving this scroll was a great pleasure. Not only because of the challenge but also for the beauty of the material and the model. 

 

        Outro detalhe bem diferente dos instrumentos modernos é o modo como o estandarte se fixa ao instrumento. Na Gamba não há espigão (o pé regulável que existe nos contrabaixos e violoncelos) e nem rabicho (o cabo, normalmente de aço, que prende o estandarte ao espigão). O estandarte é fixado por um encaixe de madeira encrustrada no instrumento como na foto ao lado.

        Another detail which differs a lot from the modern instruments is the way the tail piece fits in the instrument. In the viol, there is no endpin ( the adjustable basis found in double basses and cellos) nor wire (the cable, usually made of steel, which holds the tail piece to the endpin) . The tail piece is fixed by a wooden inlaid fitting in the instrument as shown in the picture.

 

        Os intrumentos barrocos e renascentistas sempre tiveram muitos enfeites e filetes.
        Essa viola foi filetada com o instrumento já fechado (diferente do processo descrito em "Filetando um tampo" aqui no site).
        Para diferenciar esse instrumento de qualquer outro, coisa que sempre faço quando construo um modelo, fiz um detalhe que à primeira vista parece apenas decoração e acabamento para o fundo da viola.

        Baroque and renaissance instruments always had many ornaments and purfling.
        This viola was purfling once the instrument had been sealed (different from the process described in "Purfling a top" at this site).
        In order to differentiate this instrument from any other - which I always do - I put in a detail which might look at first sight like decoration and finishing for the back of the viola.

 

        Uma vez que o músico que encomendou o instrumento chamava-se Eduardo Klein, resolvi fazer um anagrama com suas iniciais no filete. Queria dar um acabamento mais rebuscado no filete na região da noceta, mas para que o desenho continuasse simétrico fiz com que as iniciais E e K só fossem percebidas olhado o instrumento de lado. Na foto ao lado você pode ver as letras EK saindo de dentro do desenho.

        Since the musician who ordered the instrument is named Eduardo Klein, I decided to make an anagram with his initials in the purfling. I wanted to make a very elaborate finishing in the purfling in the region of the "noceta", but in order to keep the design symmetric I made the initials E and K noticeable only if you look at it sideways. In the picture, you can see the letters EK jumping out of the design.
